The X-Rays

July 12, 2008

Whenever I see the word(s) x-ray it reminds me of a bit by a comedian Mitch Hedberg (he passed away in 2005) who said that the letter ‘x’ should never start the word ‘xylophone” he felt it should be ‘zylophone” and that anyone who disagreed should have their head “z-rayed”

Anyhoodle … this post is for the purpose of showing the x-rays of my broken leg both before and after surgery

The first image shows the lower spiral break of the tibia just above the ankle and the upper fibula break beneath the knee.

The second image shows the rod inserted in my leg designed to bring the bones together. In a spiral break because the break is so far from horizontal there are a lot of shear forces if weight is ever put on the leg. To stabilize this the rod is designed to keep the whole thing from “slipping”.

Knowing the quality of Chinese construction techniques I am sure everything will be just fine.

  1. Mama mia - that looks brutal Darren! Ouch! I don’t know about that rod… kinda looks like a Chinese stringed instrument from the top end and knitting needle from the bottom! Will be thinking about you on that jaunt over that Pacific puddle this Sunday… don’t forget the pain killers! Have a safe flight. Hope to see you all soon!

  5. Ouch! shivers down my spine just looking at it.

So is all that hardware permanent or will some come off once you are healed?
Rachel wants to know what the metal is composed of: titanium? stainless steel?
    Apparently it makes a difference??

You may want to take up lawn bowling….

  6. All I know about the material for the rod is that it cost (the insurance company) about $2000 Cdn. Can Rachel determine the material by the price?

Apparently they are going to removed it in a year’s time … probably to get their money back :)

  7. Hang in there dude! It looks pretty nasty, but I know you’ll pull through. Due to the lack of details as to the cause of this injury, I’ve decided to conclude that alcohol was certainly a contributing factor - perhaps coupled with the aforementioned collision with Billy C!
