Carter’s Post - My Daddy!

September 30, 2007

Hi .. this is Carter stealing my Dad’s blog. Below is a picture I drew of my daddy.

My daddy has a cold and I am trying to make him feel better so I told him these things this morning.

“If you eat a banana then you won’t feel sick”
“You are old so then you are sick right daddy?”

Well… bye .. thanks for reading.

Recycling

September 26, 2007

The time honoured tradition of recycling Halloween costumes by parents too cheap (or economically wise) to pay for new ones. Below are some shots of Nathan trying out the costume that Carter wore 2 years ago for Halloween. The more things change the more they stay the same

Nathan - Sept. 24th, 2007 (1 year, 3 months, 20 days)

Carter - Oct. 7th, 2005 (1 year, 4 months, 9 days)

Nathan still has a few weeks to go until he reaches the age Carter was when we snapped the photos and already the costume is pretty snug on the little guy. Carter was definitely lankier and Nathan is definitely sturdier. I hope he can hold off growing for another month or we may wind up buying a new costume after all.

Typhoon Wipha

September 20, 2007

The much heralded arrival of Typhoon Wipha (wifah? weefah? Whip Ha?) failed to materialize today despite warnings from the authorities. The students were placed on “lockdown” last night in anticipation of this giant weather disturbance. We did get some heavy rains and winds for awhile but nothing extraordinary. Well .. gives us something to talk about anyhoo. Below is a picture of the projected path of the storm. Not sure where it really went.

The Face!

September 19, 2007

Carter called me into the living room rather excitedly tonight and said “Daddy I drew good!” (we are working on his grammar). This is the first drawing

Proving it wasn’t a coincidental drawing he pointed out the eyes, mouth and hair and then he drew this one before my very eyes

DALIAN WINS TOURNAMENT!!!

September 17, 2007

Ripped straight from the headlines …. Dalian Ice Dragons headed to Beijing to play in the 2007 Expat Cup and came away as champions winning the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record. We headed into the weekend hoping to not be outplayed too badly but even the most optimistic of us wouldn’t have predicted this outcome.

The scores were
Dalian Ice Dragons 2 - Mongolia 0
Dalian Ice Dragons 3 - Beijing Dragons 1
Dalian Ice Dragons 1 - Ice Hogs 0
Dalian Ice Dragons 3 - Hot Wings 2 (shootout winner)

Highlights
Donny Colangelo’s first shutout as an Ice Dragon
Donny Colangelo’s SECOND shutout as an Ice Dragon
Simon Ng scoring his first goal as an Ice Dragon
Singing “Alouette, Gentille Alouette ” to the French Canadian goalie Rene after he made a stop with his head (Et la tĂȘte, et la tĂȘte …oooooh…. )
Lamb Khebabs, Sweet Bread and Beer sitting on infant sized plastic stools at the street vendors across from the rink until 2 AM Friday night.
Watching Brent Foster skate in to congratulate our goalie on his second shutout but instead smashing his chin on Donny’s cage and then needing to go for 3 stitches.
And finally …. WINNING THE TOURNAMENT!!!!

The only thing I won’t miss about the weekend is the Beijing gridlock traffic. The 5th ring road was a parking lot. Yeah those Olympics ought to run smooooooth as silk.

Will post photos when I get some.

Proud to be an Ice Dragon!

You Never Write Anymore!

September 11, 2007

Ok ok ok! I keep harping on this but every time anyone in China tries to look at my blog this is what they see.

I use a proxy to be able to post but its a pain in the a**. Anyhow .. will post more after this weekend. We are heading to Beijing for a hockey tournie!

Nathan

September 6, 2007

One of my favourite shots of Nathan from this summer

The Great Firewall of China

A topic which I choose to revisit from time to time.

Leading up to the National People’s Congress which happens every 5 years the internet censorship here in my adopted country reaches all time highs (or lows depending on your take). This blog is blocked in China (there are ways to get around that although they are frustrating).

The latest casualty in the “ban everything cause we are so paranoid someone will say something bad about us” movement at the government level is - - - - our own school’s English website! Yes folks even Dalian Maple Leaf International School has not been spared the censor’s grasp. Those outside of the Middle Kingdom can freely access www.mapleschools.org but here inside the firewall we cannot.

Don’t know why that makes me smile but it does!

Cheers

Dance Fever!

September 1, 2007

Nathan has found a new passion (other than eating) .. dancing! The clip below gives a small glimpse into his many moves.
