Xin Nian Kuai Le!
January 5, 2007Happy New Year from the Ma-Brown clan. As you may have noticed from my previous post we are having trouble with our internet in China and it may be a few weeks more before service is restored back to the crappy old level we once enjoyed - not. This is my way of explaining why my New Year’s post has been delayed until January 4th. Anyhooo …
For our New Year’s celebrations we rang in the New Year skiing with the Helgasons

Brad and Natalie

Maya

Olina
It was skiing but let’s be serious .. the hill was no Whistler nor even Powder King in Prince George nor even Troll Mountain in Quesnel but you take what you can get. The place was called the Ming Hu ski area.

We took the kids tubing down a small bunny run with a conveyor belt to get you up the slope which was maybe 100 m long.

In the evening after putting the kids to bed Brad and I pretended to be snowboarders at the special night ski (5:30 to 8:30 pm) because it was New Year’s Eve. To minimize the pain of falling we took along a couple of Thermos fulls of Rum and Coke. As thirsty as we were I have to say I went down faster than the drink. Luckily no photos of this particular part of the evening exist. While we were turning back the clock 10 years Alice, Nat and the kids were wreaking havoc in the hotel and there was even some kisses exchanged between Carter and Maya.

On day 2 Alice and Natalie took to the slopes while Brad and I took our turn at watching the kids. I am not sure if I am worse at snowboarding or at watching the boys but I can tell you that Alice is better at child minding and skiing.

Some miscellaneous shots of the family and the area.

Wow, great post Darren. Looks like a great time was had by all!! Happy New Year to ya. And I have to say, I just got back from skiing Powder King, and Purden (both great, though missed the 90+ cm of fresh snow PK just got in 48 hours!!) We are at Kicking Horse in Golden BC, after a big storm came through. They opened the highway just in time for us to come though with Simon for a few days of wicked pow!! Very pumped that you skied in Dalian. How close is this place? Day visit, or did you have to overnight somewhere?

To clarify some things .. it was artificial snow although it did snow overnight. You can easily do a day trip. It is about an hour from Song Hai to the hill. Supposedly there is a better mountain about 3 hours north at AnBo. If you have your own equipment then its only 20 rmb entry but if you don’t have equipment then you pay 110 rmb for 2 hours. We had a blast! Thinking about getting the defieux’s, engleson’s, colorado’s etc for big weekend trip. This one was supposed to be that but there were some children that fell ill and so the numbers drastically reduced.
