Bing Qiu

November 19, 2006

Bing qiu is Chinese for ice hockey and yesterday for Cosmo’s birthday the Kai Fa Qu kid gang took to the ice down at NewMart in Dalian. The rink is small but plenty big enough for the dads as we spent much of our time hunkered over holding on to our toddlers in a vain effort to get them to skate.

Below are some pics of Carter in his first attempt at skating and I must say I was quite proud of his achievement. His skates were dull and the ice was a bit rough which helped him stay upright to be sure. Big thanks to the Conradi’s for lending us the skates and the great day in general. Carter was able to walk/skate a few steps with me holding one of his hands and when I gave him a hockey stick he forgot that he couldn’t stand up on skates and managed to stand by himself and take a few whacks at the puck without falling on his kiester. At one point he dropped his stick and bent over to pick it up himself. I was a very proud papa not necessarily at what he was able to do but rather that he attempted it without fear or shyness. He generally doesn’t like to try anything new in front of a crowd and if he doesn’t succeed he can sour on the activity fairly quickly so yesterday was huge for him.

Anyway .. the photos
