NERD!!!!

November 30, 2006

I realize that a blog can be for more things than a record of what the family is doing. It is a chance to invite people into your world and maybe once in a while show some creativity. Now let’s be serious - you aren’t going to see me writing poems or exposing my inner soul (neither of which are interesting to anyone including me) but I would like to use this post to share a puzzle in logic with you that I really enjoyed working on. Yeah .. I’m a nerd so what? I like Star Trek. I have a major in Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science. I enjoy playing Trivial Pursuit cause I am generally good at it. I prefer doing a crossword puzzle to reading the entertainment (or dare I say it) even the sports section in a newspaper. The history of mathematics and mathematicians is interesting to me. My favourite book as a kid was Isaac Asimov’s Book of Facts (mosquitoes have 47 teeth in case you didn’t know - at 1o years old I did). And that is just the tip of the iceberg of my nerdiness so if you are feeling like getting in touch with your nerdy side and tackling a logic puzzle try the one below.

Who Owns The Fish?
There are five houses in a row and in five different colours.
In each house lives a person from a different country.
Each person drinks a certain drink, plays a certain sport, and keeps a certain pet.
No two people drink the same drink, play the same sport, or keep the same pet.
• The Brit lives in a red house
• The Swede keeps dogs
• The Dane drinks tea
• The green house is on the left of the white house
• The green house owner drinks coffee
• The person who plays polo rears birds
• The owner of the yellow house plays hockey
• The man living in the house right in the centre drinks milk
• The Norwegian lives in the first house
• The man who plays baseball lives next to the man who keeps cats
• The man who keeps horses lives next to the one who plays hockey
• The man who plays billiards drinks beer
• The German plays soccer
• The Norwegian lives next to the blue house
• The man who plays baseball has a neighbour who drinks water.

Who Owns The Fish?

Have fun!

Family Photo Shoot

A few weekends back we got photos done with the local photographer extraordinaire - Wanru. The photos are a gift for the family back home but we have decided here at MIMK ( for Craig who detests acronyms thus explaining his recent I hate ABBA post) to give a sneak peek from the photo shoot. A few shots of the boys

Carter’s First Cut

November 26, 2006

No, no, no! This post has nothing to do with circumsions for those that may have “gone there”. Today’s post is to chronicle Carter’s first attempt with the digital camera and the video feature. He picked up the camera and was trying his best to take a picture but instead had the camera turned to the video mode and this is what he shot.

The Greatest Game That Was Never Played

Some things in China just never go they way you want them to … tonight was no exception. Currently in our suburb of Kai Fa Qu the Chinese National Inline Hockey Championship is being contested. The sad thing about it is … no one in Kai Fa Qu knows about it. We (as in the teachers at Maple Leaf) are fully aware of it however and would desperately love to play but we cannot enter in the tourney officially because we are not Chinese. Seems reasonable so our fearless captain Adrian has being doing a lot of background wheeling and dealing (approx 40 phone calls in 3 days) to get us a side game with a team in the tourney.

Tonight was to be the pinnacle of success in foreigners cultivating guan xi (connections) and we had a game arranged with a team from Tang Shan. If you have heard of the city before it is because it was the site of a 1976 earthquake that killed more than 500,000 people. That however is not the focus of our story tonight though. As mentioned we had the game arranged for 7:00 PM but when we arrived the building was locked up with the lights out. We found the “turn the lights on guy” but no amount of offering alcohol and cigarettes was going to get him to open up shop. We tried to contact the big boss man to present him with the necessary “gifts” for it to happen but we came up empty handed.

The long and short of it was about 30 guys milling around for 15 to 20 minutes before finally accepting fate and going home. We are told that tomorrow at 4 PM conditions will be more favourable.

I would post photos or video or even a chinese press release about the championships but as none exist none can be posted.

C eh? N eh? D eh?

Bing Qiu

November 19, 2006

Bing qiu is Chinese for ice hockey and yesterday for Cosmo’s birthday the Kai Fa Qu kid gang took to the ice down at NewMart in Dalian. The rink is small but plenty big enough for the dads as we spent much of our time hunkered over holding on to our toddlers in a vain effort to get them to skate.

Below are some pics of Carter in his first attempt at skating and I must say I was quite proud of his achievement. His skates were dull and the ice was a bit rough which helped him stay upright to be sure. Big thanks to the Conradi’s for lending us the skates and the great day in general. Carter was able to walk/skate a few steps with me holding one of his hands and when I gave him a hockey stick he forgot that he couldn’t stand up on skates and managed to stand by himself and take a few whacks at the puck without falling on his kiester. At one point he dropped his stick and bent over to pick it up himself. I was a very proud papa not necessarily at what he was able to do but rather that he attempted it without fear or shyness. He generally doesn’t like to try anything new in front of a crowd and if he doesn’t succeed he can sour on the activity fairly quickly so yesterday was huge for him.

Anyway .. the photos

“The Prequel” Part II

November 18, 2006

Well .. the idea of the catchy prequel title didn’t take off on this blog as I’d hoped (thanks however for your effort Chowie) but in person Blakey D. and I have had quite a bit of fun eliciting laughter from only each other with our dull wit. This is what we have thus far.

By Blake

“Mission Difficult”
“Fistful of Pennies”
“Losing Forrester”
and my favourite
“Thursday the 12th”

I added
“When We Were Princes”
“Cannonball Walk”
“1 Dalmation”
“WristShot”
“Monday to Friday at Bernie’s”
“Friday Night Sniffles”
“Live Hard”
“The Fifth Sense”
“One Good Man”
“The Bleating of the Lambs”
“Argument Club”
“American History IX”
“The Ferry Across the River Kwai”
“Tree Gump”
“The Undergraduate”
“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Baby”
“Sit Down By Me”
“A Stagecoach Named Desire”

And the list could go on and on but I have subjected you to enough

Husband 30 Years Younger than Wife

November 17, 2006

The Northeast Network is at again with top quality investigative journalism. Previously we had the 105 year old double Ph.D. holder seeking a bride 50 years his junior and now the latest - Husband 30 Years Younger than Wife

Some quotes
“Thirty-eight-year-old Li Yucheng married 68-year-old Ma Yuqin in the winter of 1997 with most of their relatives and friends fiercely opposed but are now living happily ever after.”

” “You can’t imagine the hardships we’ve been through in the past nine years,” Ma told newsphoto.com. “Relatives on both sides did their utmost to fight against our marriage. My son saw me like an enemy and wouldn’t allow me to go back home.”
So the newlywed couple built a shabby hogan in the paddy field one kilometer away from the village and lived there to avoid criticism from the village folk.”

Can’t wait to see what they lead with on Valentine’s Day.

The Prequel

November 16, 2006

George Lucas made the idea of a prequel famous with his prequel trilogy to Star Wars. The jury is out on how good the movies were compared to episodes IV, V, and VI with Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher (nice sequine bikini) but the idea at least was very intriguing.

Some how the office banter today got us to discuss a great idea for the prequel
“Young Yeller”
Adrian’s sharp wit gave us
“Black Colt”

The challenge to the regular readers of MIMK is to sharpen your wit and come up with good prequel titles.

105-year Old Double PhD Holder Seeks Ms. Right

November 13, 2006

This beautiful headline was snatched from the English Northeast Network a website that has news on the recent events in the DongBei (Northeast) region where we live. It is based out of Shenyang which is the capital city of our province of Liaoning.

A brief excerpt of the story

Gong Duruo, 105, a double PhD holder started searching for Ms. Right on his blog Wednesday, which surprised netizens nationwide, wrote the Chinese Business Morning View Friday.

” I cannot live without love any more, and I want someone to spend the rest of my life with,” thrice-divorced Gong wrote in his blog.

Gong wrote that he wanted a woman who knew a bit about medicine, and if she were around 50 years old, that would be a plus.

He has received ten applications within two days. Zhang, 52, who comes from a long line of doctors’ families, caught Gong’s eye.

Zhang runs a beauty salon after her retirement in Shenyang, northeast China’s Liaoning Province, some two thousand kilometers away from Gong’s home in Baotou, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

” I am willing to give up my business and to leave my daughter for him,” Zhang concluded.

She will be an apprentice rather than a wife, and many netizens questioned Zhang’s intentions.

And now you know ….. the rest of the story

Look Ma - No Hands!

November 12, 2006

Nathan has now reached an infant milestone - sitting up unassisted. He can sit for more than 5 minutes at a time and grab and play with toys. If one is out of his reach he can lean forward, grab it and sit back up with it. Sounds like some basic skills but for any parent they know what an achievement this is. He just turned 5 months and according to the baby books he is quite a bit ahead of his time in this physical aspect. If you’ve ever held the little tank you get a sense of how strong he is. Carter is getting his licks in now cause when Nathan grows up he is gonna kick his .. well .. you know.

Snow Hosehead!

Took the title from Bob and Doug’s Christmas album ..
“Look out the window”
“What?”
“Snow Hosehead!”

With December approaching it will soon be time to dig that CD out and sit with eggnog (that’s right Michelle - December) and get into the Christmas spirit which can be hard in a land of official athiesm. Last week we had a dusting of snow that was pretty wet and didn’t really stick around but Carter and his Hao Pengyou (Good Buddy in Chinese - as in “You go your ears on Hao Pengyou?”) Magnus went outside and ran around in the falling snow. After 20 minutes the hands got cold and they had to come in but Alice got the following on video.

TV Theme Songs - Part II

November 8, 2006

It was great to have so many people give their favourite theme song and I have to say I enjoyed them all except for “Saved By The Bell” - if you want a good 90’s theme song then “Beverly Hills 90210″ is what you are looking for. The opening guitar riff .. beautiful.

Of course Chowie Magnum had to be there - one of the all time greats. Pity the fool who doesn’t like Jeff’s selection for The A-Team theme. Loved the entry by Mom and Dad with Bonanza - a classic but I have not heard the Green Acres theme yet but it is on my list. Trust Schmurler to plant “The Fall Guy” theme in my head after it had been long forgotten. Potter always defines funk with his “Streets of San Francisco” entry. I would expect nothing less of Conradi but to post a song that was played at the END of a show rather than the beginning. Snow Monkey violation anyone?

There were a couple of omissions that I thought might make it - “Knight Rider (don’t Hasel the Hoff)”, “The Friendly Giant (the only cool song on a flute/recorder)”, “Gilligan’s Island (too campy? too obvious?)”, “The Brady Bunch (too many times?)”, “Mission Impossible (did Tom Cruise ruin it?), “Welcome Back Kotter (Wuh? Where?)”, “Hill Street Blues (too much piano maybe)”, “The Greatest American Hero (Believe it or not)”

My bad ol’ narcissistic self went on YouTube and captured my top five tv theme song intros and here are the links to the videos

#5) The Littlest Hobo

#4) Sanford and Son

#3) Simon and Simon

#2) Hawaii Five-O

#1) Spiderman 1967

Charles In Charge

November 6, 2006

Viewing Craig’s site and his Dynasty post I started to reflect on some of the poor television viewing habit choices I have made over the years. There are many questionable hours of my youth and adulthood spent in front of a television set but perhaps the winner, or loser as the case may be, is the latenight hours at UBC watching “Charles in Charge” reruns. My roommate at the time whose name coincidentally enough was also Darren thought I was insane - and he was right. So here is my homage to that kooky cast of characters who made up the “Charles In Charge” cast. For fans of the show I am partial to the Powell family episodes rather than the earlier Pembroke family episodes.

By the way Craig I was always a Dallas fan. I remember going to camp in grade 6 and a buddy of mine (Alan Stark) and I doing a rendition of the trumpet theme of Dallas and having the other kids around us actually thinking it was cool (yup - girls too).

Anyhooo … a vid and photo of my “guilty pleasure” - Charles in Charge

Da Boys!

November 4, 2006

When the pressures of life and work get you down where do you turn to for a pick-me-up? Lately for me the best remedy for the blahs (not very eloquent but it’s my blog so I can write what I want) is watching my boys interact. Nathan thinks that Carter is the funniest kid in the whole world which is fitting considering that Carter thinks Carter is the funniest kid in the world. They both crack me up and can really turn a bad mood into a good one. Some video of what I am talking about ….

The Big O!

November 1, 2006

Hey … not that O! I am talking about Carter’s first complete drawing of the letter O. He did it tonight on his little magnetic doodler. I have drawn quite possibly upwards of 1000 O’s in the hopes he would get it. It seemed like it was not sinking in until tonight when he drew the O pictured below. The random squiggles were his first attempts to start the circle but once established he closed that loop like a pro! When Alice questioned him about how he learned it he said “Baba jiao” which means Daddy taught me. Yeah .. pretty damn proud at this moment.

THE BIG Q!!! - An update to this post. When Carter looked at the blog he said “Oh! Letter Q!” Hey - he said it was an O when he drew it and that is what I am sticking with.
