Television theme songs are fading fast

October 19, 2006

Just saw this headline on Yahoo and in essence it sums up the trend in TV right now is to ditch the opening montage including a catchy “make you wanna watch” theme song. The article can be found by clicking here. For the millions of you who regularly check this blog (Craig, Adrian, Mom and Auntie Carol) please post a comment with your favourite TV theme song. Now Adrian it does NOT have to be a show that you have watched as long as you are familiar with the theme song. Example - I don’t recall ever watching Gilligan’s Island but it is a catchy theme song. This is now known as the “Snow Monkey Rule” - click here for details on this inside joke. Be sure to check the comments as well

  1. Now I don’t claim to be Craig, Adrian, Mom or Auntie Carol, but I do haunt this blog! And I’m totally legal as far as the Snow Monkey Rule is concerned when I say Mike Post baby, Mike Post. Specifically, I’m thinking the theme to Magnum P.I. You’ve got it all in that song, the beat, the rippin’ 80’s guitars and synth, and the visuals in the opening montage to boot - Magnum peeling out through the grass in the Ferrari 308 GTS! Nice, but it’s gonna piss of Higgy Baby!

  3. This list is very, very exstensive, categories MUST be instituted. Hmmm, let me see, tv theme songs…I know - The Fall Guy. It’s manly, simple and classic - with a Waylon Jennings type feel to boot. Great theme song, and let’s be real here, that visual of heather Locklear in her blue bikini doesn’t hurt the tune either. I want to go on record as saying, I disagree with eliminating the theme songs, they are/ were an intrical part of the television experience!

  4. I guess we are dating ourselves but the one that quickly pops into my head is of course the theme from” Bonanza” You and your friends probley don’t even remember that one. For your Dad he quickly started to sing the theme from “Geen Acres”.You should give these two a listen.

  7. For pure funk power I would have to go with the wah-wah & screeching tire fueled theme that started every episode of ‘Streets of San Francisco’

  8. There is no question–it’s Hawaii 5-0! But I have to say funky tune that wraps up sesame street…now that was a powerful funk! NO, I’m not talking about “Sunny day” I’m talking about the instrumental when the credits appear and show was declared to have been brought to us by the letter Z and the number 6.
